Georgian silkwork picture of pigeons
Georgian silkwork picture of pigeons
7725
A rare Georgian maple framed fine silkwork picture of two pigeons, circa 1820.
Silkwork pictures were a popular form of decorative needlework, particularly during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Using finely coloured silk threads worked onto silk or linen grounds, embroiderers created remarkably detailed landscapes, portraits, biblical scenes and sentimental subjects.
Faces, skies and other intricate areas were sometimes painted rather than stitched, giving the pictures an appealing combination of embroidery and watercolour. Many were produced by accomplished young women as part of their education, while others were professionally made.
Georgian and Regency examples are especially sought after today, particularly when retaining their period frames.
