Regency miniature portrait of a gentleman
Regency miniature portrait of a gentleman
7777
An ebony-framed Regency miniature portrait of an English gentleman in a blue frock coat, circa 1810.
Miniature portraits were intimate works of art treasured as personal keepsakes. Typically painted in watercolour on thin sheets of ivory, they depicted loved ones with remarkable delicacy and detail.
Miniatures were often commissioned to commemorate marriages, engagements or family relationships and were carried close to the owner or displayed in the home. Portraits might be mounted in gold frames, lockets or brooches, sometimes incorporating locks of hair to the reverse.
Regency examples are particularly admired for their elegant costumes, softly modelled faces and luminous colouring, capturing both fashionable society and private affection.
