An 18th century gilded gesso carved mythical griffin wall carving, possibly Italian.

Griffins are legendary creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Symbolising strength, courage, and protection, they appear in ancient myths from Greece, Persia, and Egypt. Revered as guardians of treasure and divine power, griffins were believed to watch over sacred places. Their dual nature-king of beasts and king of birds-made them powerful emblems of majesty. Even today, griffins inspire fantasy art, literature, and heraldry around the world.
