The Meiji Period (1868-1912) marked Japan's rapid modernisation and Westernisation following the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate. Under Emperor Meiji, the country underwent political, economic, and social transformations. Feudal domains were replaced by a centralised government, and the samurai class dissolved.
Modern industries, transportation, and education systems flourished. The 1889 Meiji Constitution established a constitutional monarchy. Militarily, Japan strengthened, defeating China (1895) and Russia (1905), asserting itself as a global power.
