A fine Japanese root and wicker double basket circa 1900

Japanese root baskets, known as ne-kago or ne-ami, are traditional handcrafted containers made from the intertwining roots of plants such as wisteria, bamboo, or trees found in mountainous regions. Unlike typical woven baskets, these are shaped by nature itself-roots are dug up, cleaned, and skilfully arranged to highlight their organic forms.

Root baskets are admired for their rustic, sculptural beauty and are often used in ikebana (flower arrangement) to complement natural aesthetics. Each basket is unique, reflecting the artisan's sensitivity to the material's natural curves and textures.

Over centuries, they have symbolised harmony between human craftsmanship and nature's artistry.
