Cricket tables were a popular form of vernacular furniture in 18th-century Britain, particularly in country cottages and inns. Characterised by their circular tops and three splayed legs, their simple construction provided excellent stability, even on uneven stone or timber floors. Most were made by local craftsmen using readily available woods such as oak, elm, ash or fruitwood, often combining different timbers in a single piece.
Surviving examples frequently display wonderful signs of age, including rich patination, wear and old repairs. Originally practical everyday furniture, genuine 18th-century cricket tables are now highly sought after for their simplicity, character and distinctly English country appeal.
