A bold and elegant 18ct yellow gold Retro cocktail ring, attributed to Cartier, Paris, circa 1940. The sculptural setting centres on a large synthetic cabochon sapphire of intense blue colour, creating a striking contrast with the warmth of the richly polished yellow gold.
The generous, rounded cabochon and confident scale are characteristic of the glamour and exuberance associated with the French Retro period. Created during the 1940s, when Parisian jewellers embraced strong silhouettes, sweeping forms, and dramatic coloured stones, rings of this type were conceived as miniature works of sculpture-designed to make an impression from across a room.
Although the ring is unsigned and its inventory marks have worn with time, it was acquired from a gentleman whose father worked in the Paris workshops.
