A fabulous mid-century Italian 18ct gold, enamel, and diamond cockatoo brooch, dating to around 1960.
Finely modelled in substantial 18ct gold, the bird is perched upon a branch and brilliantly decorated with translucent enamels in rich shades of ruby red, emerald green, yellow and cobalt blue.
Its wonderfully extravagant swept crest is highlighted with a graduated row of diamonds, adding just the right amount of sparkle, while the large expressive eye is beautifully picked out in blue and yellow enamel.
The reverse reveals the fine chased and engraved workmanship beneath the enamel and retains its original Continental pin fitting. The exuberant design is characteristic of the imaginative animal and bird jewellery produced by Italian goldsmiths during the mid-20th century, particularly the workshops of Valenza.
