A large ornate silver plater punch bowl with grape vine border and ladle, circa 1900.

Punch bowls date back to the 17th century, originating in India where British sailors encountered a mixed drink called "panch," meaning five, referring to its five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and spices. The drink was brought to Britain, where it became popular among the upper classes.

Large, decorative bowls were crafted from porcelain, silver, and glass to serve punch at social gatherings. During the 18th and 19th centuries, punch bowls symbolised hospitality and celebration. Their popularity declined in the 20th century as individual drinks became fashionable, but they remain valued as decorative and historical serving pieces today.
