Old Sheffield Plate, developed in the 1740s by Thomas Boulsover in Sheffield, England, was an early method of fusing a thin layer of silver to a copper base. This technique allowed for the production of affordable yet elegant silverware, making luxury goods accessible to a broader market.
Popular throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, Old Sheffield Plate was used for items like candlesticks, trays, and tea sets. It was eventually replaced by electroplating in the mid-19th century.
