Virgen del Carmen and Christ child
Virgen del Carmen and Christ child
7717
An early 19th century Spanish oil on panel of the Virgen del Carmen holding the Christ child surrounded by cherubs, circa 1820.
The Virgen del Carmen (Virgin of Mount Carmel) is a particularly venerated representation of the Virgin Mary in Catalonia and across the Mediterranean.
Her devotion is associated with the Carmelite Order, whose origins lie on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. She is traditionally depicted holding the Christ Child and wearing the brown Carmelite habit, often carrying the Brown Scapula*, a symbol of protection and devotion. She is especially regarded as the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
