The pietra dura top is likely to have been purchased as a souvenir of a grand tour of Europe and is richly decorated with a bird perched on a flowering branch. The ebonized base and gilt gallery would have been added by a British craftsman on its return to the United Kingdom. All in all a stunning example if its type.
