An elegant early 19th-century porphyry and hardstone candlestick, later converted into a lamp, circa 1820. The rich, densely mottled porphyry is beautifully complemented by contrasting hardstone elements, creating a restrained yet highly decorative object with the weight, colour, and material presence associated with the finest classical-inspired interiors of the period.
Originally made as a candlestick, the piece has been sympathetically adapted for modern use while retaining the architectural simplicity of its original design. Its carefully balanced proportions and polished stone surfaces lend it an enduringly sophisticated appearance, whether placed on a desk, console, bedside table, or mantelpiece.
Porphyry was especially admired in the late 18th and early 19th centuries for its association with antiquity and imperial Roman taste. Its distinctive deep red-purple ground, animated by lighter crystalline inclusions, makes each example unique. Combined here with hardstone detailing, it gives the lamp a handsome visual depth and a strong decorative silhouette.
The lamp has been professionally rewired with brown twisted fabric flex, chosen to complement its period character, and has been PAT tested for use. A refined and practical decorative antique, ideal for a classical, Regency, or Grand Tour-inspired interior.
