French hand-beaten chauffoir
French hand-beaten chauffoir
7564
An early 18th century French hand-beaten and decorated chauffoir with owner's initials.
A chauffoir was a small portable vessel used from the 17th to 19th centuries for carrying hot coals or embers.
Most commonly made from brass, copper, iron, or silver, chauffoirs were designed to provide warmth in drafty houses before the advent of central heating. They often featured pierced sides and a handle, allowing heat to circulate while making them easy to carry from room to room. Some examples were highly decorative, reflecting the craftsmanship of the period, while others were purely functional.
Today, chauffoirs are sought after by collectors of antique metalware and domestic antiques, offering insight into historic household life.
