A handsome Edwardian sterling silver coffee pot by Mappin & Webb, Sheffield, 1926.
Of elegant neoclassical form, with a tapering body decorated with bold vertical fluting, raised on a circular pedestal foot. The hinged domed lid is similarly fluted and topped with a finial, with a long sweeping spout and angular ebonised handle. A beautifully proportioned and substantial piece by one of Britain's most celebrated silversmiths.
Mappin & Webb traces its origins to 1775, when Jonathan Mappin established a silversmithing business in Sheffield. During the 19th century the firm expanded rapidly, becoming renowned for finely made silverware, jewellery and luxury goods. In 1860 Jonathan's grandson, John Mappin, was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb, creating the name Mappin & Webb.
The company opened prestigious showrooms in London and developed an international clientele. Celebrated for both traditional craftsmanship and fashionable design, Mappin & Webb supplied royalty and received numerous Royal Warrants.
Today, the firm remains one of Britain's best-known names in fine jewellery and silver.
